Greek Orthodox Church
The iconostasis is reduced so sight lines can penetrate the sanctuary beyond, strengthening the relationship between the people and the clergy. The nave is defined by Christ, the closest connection to humanity and divinity. The sanctuary is defined by God, the holiest of the Church, the most sacred of spaces. The Bell Tower, the beacon of the church, is represented by the Holy Spirit, the messenger of the people. Transparency occurs only as a view to the heavens, all direct natural light entering the sanctuary is from above. Translucency from the modern icons on either side of the vestibule and nave spaces, allowing alteration of light through artificial techniques, somber services are lit from inside, reducing translucency of material, shrinking space within. Celebration services are lit from the outside, creating expansive space inside by the flow of light through iconographic panels. Light can also be seen from the small spaces between the nave and sanctuary wall design. Iconographic spaces are defined by wooden slats oriented to permit slivers of light from the exterior. The four cylinders denote the presence of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. Located at the narthex, two large connected cylinders at the nave and sanctuary signify Jesus and the Holy Father. Roof of vestibule shrinks and expands in the same fashion to indicate somber and celebratory services. The sanctuary combines seven main compartments of space. The narthex (1), the vestibule (2), the nave (2), the sanctuary (2). Each section measures 5 x 5 meters with a small circulation path at the left of the sanctuary. Area below the vestibule is occupied by the catechumens praying for entry into the church, separated from visible view of the sanctuary. The porch beneath the entry to the church, swells up to meet the narthex, initial vestibule space by creating foundation partitions. This space enters into the floor of the sanctuary, creating a rhythmic pattern of concrete and earth, representing the human-accounts of the creation of the earth. It is the space of the human element, who are trying to find divinity of the heavens above. Now thats fuckin’ sacred.
